Business summary
Before getting the installation of the pergola started, it’s essential to determine what types of plants you want growing up the structure itself. Climbing vines can create a beautiful display on their own and provide shade during hot summer months without blocking necessary light from entering your home. A pergola usually consists of four posts linked together with beams and rafters at the top, covered with slats. The beams are covered with decking, while the rafters are covered with roofing shingles. The shaft, rafter and roof must be strong enough to bear the load of the material used for protecting it. For example, if you use three-quarter-inch thick plywood decking on a pergola that spans six feet in width and ten feet in length, then you need a beam that can support at least 480 pounds. If your shaft is not strong enough to hold this weight, you could end up with a sagging or collapsed structure that fails to perform its primary function: protection from the elements
